HARRIET tells the extraordinary tale of Harriet Tubman’s escape from slavery and transformation into one of America’s greatest heroes. Her courage, ingenuity, and tenacity freed hundreds of slaves and changed the course of history. Academy Award-nominee and Tony Award-winner, Cynthia Erivo, plays the title character with an emotional intensity and charismatic flair. She evens sings one of the film’s main songs, Stand Up, for which both she and her writing partner have received a Best Original Song Oscar nomination. Rated PG-13.

FILM: Joker

In Gotham City, mentally troubled comedian Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) is disregarded and mistreated by society. He then embarks on a downward spiral of revolution and bloody crime. This path brings him face-to-face with his alter-ego: the Joker. Phoenix’s multi-layered performance continues to rack up acting honors, and is considered the front-runner to take home the Academy Award for Lead Actor. The film also boasts another 10 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Rated R

FILM: Rodin

Paris, 1880. 40 year-old Rodin (Vincent Lindon) finally receives his first state commission, “The Gates of Hell,” which will include “The Kiss” and “The Thinker,” two of his most famous creations.  His relationship with Camille Claudel seems to drive his artistic output during this time. Rodin’s statue of Balzac, long in the making and rejected during his lifetime, will become the starting point of modern sculpture. Film is Not Rated, but does contain brief nudity.

Creative Mixer

The Salida Council for the Arts (SFTA) hosts a monthly Creative Mixer on the 2nd Thursday of every month in the Paquette Gallery. Artists of all genres are welcome to come mix and mingle and meet this month’s featured artist from the region and working in fiber arts. The Council provides tasty hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar is open for business.

Salida Soup

Salida Soup is a monthly community-based potluck where participants, through this microgranting dinner, assist creative projects in the Arkansas River Valley. A potluck item and a $5 donation is all it takes to be eligible to vote on the evening’s presentations. If you cannot make it to the event itself, you can now watch and vote live each month!

Bow Wow is a traveling film festival that celebrates, educates and inspires all things doggie, through the art of short film. Bow Wow Film Fest features some of the years’ best pooch-themed short films all wrapped up in one beautiful, fun-loving package! All proceeds from the event benefit the Ark-Valley Humane Society. Tickets can be purchased at the Salida SteamPlant, the Salida Chamber of Commerce, Free the Monkey in Salida, and at Ark-Valley Humane Society.
