Oscar Nominated Short Films

The SteamPlant is happy to bring the annual screening of 2020 Oscar Nominated Short Films to the big screen for a third consecutive year! With two categories being screened this year – Animated and Live Action – this is your chance to predict the winners (and have the edge in your Oscar pool)! A perennial hit with audiences around the country and the world, you won’t want to miss this year’s selection of shorts. The Academy Awards take place Sunday, February 9th. The Animation category will screen on Jan. 31 and the Live Action category will screen on Feb. 2.  A list of titles in the program, along with synopses, will be available after the official Oscar nominations are announced on Jan. 13.

Artist Opening Reception: Kathy Davidoff
Thursday, Jan. 2                5:00-7:00 pm

Open to the public

Come join us in the Paquette Gallery at the SteamPlant for the opening show of works from artist, Kathy Davidoff. Her show, Wildlife – A closeup view, showcases the amazing birds/animals that we are surrounded by.  The show will consist of about 35 photographs on metal or framed, chosen to give the viewers an opportunity to really see some animals up close. Live music will featured by a duo of Acoustic Guitar and Viola, performed by Brian Bishop and Lindsay Davis.

Friends of the SteamPlant Dedication
Friday, Jan. 3                    5:00-6:30 pm

Open to the public

The Friends of the SteamPlant invite the community to the dedication of a permanent history exhibit, titled “The SteamPlant Story,” in the SteamPlant lobby. The dedication will be followed by a reception with refreshments.  The newly-installed, historical panel display will be the last contribution made to the facility by the Friends of the SteamPlant, a non-profit organization that has played a central role in the development and early operation of the Salida SteamPlant Event Center.

FILM: Judy

Saturday, Jan. 4

Thirty years after rising to global stardom in the Wizard of Oz, showbiz legend Judy Garland (Renee Zellweger) arrives in London to perform a five-week sold-out run at The Talk of the Town. Featuring some of her best-known songs, the film celebrates the unyielding spirit and matchless talent of “the world’s greatest entertainer.” Film is Rated PG-13.

Creative Mixer

Open to the public

The Salida Council for the Arts (SFTA) hosts a monthly Creative Mixer on the 2nd Thursday of every month in the Paquette Gallery. Artists of all genres are welcome to come mix and mingle and meet this month’s featured artist from the region and working in fiber arts. The Council provides tasty hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar is open for business.

MUSIC: Rok Skool Winter Showcase

Rok Skool is a program that uses the Rock Band model to instill discipline, accountability, self confidence and the social skills needed to produce professional caliber performances. Rookies’, Jr Varsity, Ladies’, Varsity and Collegiate Rok Skools will all perform.

FILM: Picasso and Braque Go to the Movies

As a kick-off to the film award season and the start of 2020’s Art on Film series, we present this documentary that looks at how early filmmaking influenced the Cubist painters Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Narrated by Oscar-winning director, Martin Scorsese. Film is Not Rated.

Salida Soup

Salida Soup is a monthly community-based potluck where participants, through this microgranting dinner, assist creative projects in the Arkansas River Valley. A potluck item and a $5 donation is all it takes to be eligible to vote on the evening’s presentations. Blessing of the Water Reception

An annual tradition of the Rocky Mountain deanery atop Monarch Pass for the Blessing of the Waters. This Rocky Mountain tradition dates back to the late 1990’s under the leadership of Archpriest Joseph Hirsch of blessed memory. After the Blessing, the participants are invited to warm up over a hearty soup and bread fellowship meal at the SteamPlant Ballroom sponsored by Holy Theophany Church in Colorado Springs.

Chamber of Commerce Community Awards

The annual awards are intended to honor the people who make a substantial contribution to the community of Salida. As a result of the winners’ efforts, the Salida community is a better place to live and work. Ticket are available in advance at the Salida Chamber of Commerce as well as at the door. A silent auction will take place prior to the awards being announced. The evening also will feature a cash bar and hors d’oeuvres.

The SteamPlant is proud to present this film as a kick-off to the community’s Asia Festival! A Chinese family discovers their grandmother has only a short while left to live and decide to keep her in the dark, scheduling a wedding to gather before she dies. Nominated for two Golden Globes – Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for Awkwafina (CRAZY RICH ASIANS) and Best Foreign Language Film. Rated PG.
