Theatre Camp and Performance Workshop
This summer the Salida Creative District will be offering a one week theatre camp for students ages 10 to 16. The camp will run from 9:00am to 3:30pm, Monday, June 18th through Friday, June 22nd. The camp will conclude on Friday afternoon with a performance for the entire community of the production, The Art of Changing Mae Mae.

The camp is being taught by Michelle Grimes, an actress and theatre instructor from the Denver area. Michelle Grimes has been performing in the Denver area for over 30 years and has a master’s degree in Arts in Education. She has written nine children’s theatre productions and has directed and produced children’s theatre for over 20 years. Michelle also teaches 4th grade for the Englewood School District. She has been on the board of the Colorado Community Theatre Coalition for over 20 years and has helped to promote and support community theatre throughout the state. She loves Salida, and has helped to bring the Colorado Theatre Festival to the Steamplant for a number of years.
About the Show
The Art of Changing Mae Mae is the story of a troubled girl that travels with her class to the art museum. Mae Mae is angry at life, has no friends, and expresses her anger outwardly by acting out. At the museum she is separated from her class and the masterpieces, found in the museum, come to life to help teach her life lessons in friendship. She learns that she can express herself through art, dance, and music. Mae Mae learns to love life, and herself. It is a beautifully visual show that engages the audience through a variety of genres of music, dance, and visual arts. Students will collaborate in a challenging, exciting, and fun way to learn the ins and outs of putting on a show. This all day workshop offers students a deep understanding of foundational acting skills by rehearsing an original show written to promote a love and appreciation of the arts. It’s an amazing opportunity for Salida’s youth to create and perform an original art piece during Salida ART WALK!
