Sunday Science: Children’s Science Festival!
December 23, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pmFree
The Central Colorado Humanists continue there December season of HumanLight with a special Sunday Science celebration: a Children’s Science Festival!
In 1824 Michael Faraday, one of the world’s greatest scientists who also believed that scientists should share their knowledge and enthusiasm with the younger generation, began his famous Christmas Lectures for children.
Inspired by Michael Faraday’s vision, the Central Colorado Humanists will sponsor Salida’s own version: the Children’s Science Festival for kids ages 6 to 13. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Former science teacher Greg Justis, with 35 years of experience, will be presenting this science lecture/demonstration program directed toward elementary and middle school children (and their parents). The program will honor Michael Faraday by highlighting and demonstrating his invention of the electric motor. Kids will have the opportunity to do a hands-on experiment with magnets to explore invisible magnetic fields and observe the world’s simplest electric train.
Additionally, Bill Sample, an electrical engineer and Boys & Girls Club STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) volunteer, will join with kids from the club to demonstrate their award-winning Europa and why NASA has future plans to send space probes to the moon. Finally, an amazing sizzling model of Europa will also be constructed right in front of the audience!
The program will conclude with a wintertime celebration of hot chocolate and cookies for those attending.
