FIBArk: June 15-18, 2017

2017 marks the 69th anniversary of FIBArk, the nation’s oldest whitewater festival and Salida’s signature event. Since 1949, every June during the Spring snow runoff, Salida has hosted FIBArk, “First in Boating on the Arkansas.”

The festival focuses on whitewater boat races and paddlers from around the nation and world come to compete. The town is consumed with FIBArk. Every person who lives in Salida is involved as a merchant, a volunteer, or a spectator and people who come from out of town fill Salida to the brim to witness one of the premier boat races in North America.

Now, celebrating it’s 69th year, FIBArk continues in its long tradition to celebrate its past, experience the present, and embrace its future. The FIBArk Youth Paddling Program is a successful instructional series which develops the next generation of paddlers beginning with safety, roll and stroke coaching. The current board of directors has placed a greater emphasis on continuing this popular and important part of the FIBArk mission.

The festival is presented by a group of dedicated people who volunteer their time to organize the event and annually a Board of Directors is chosen to plan, promote and present all the weekend activities. FIBArk would not be possible, however, without the support of literally hundreds of people in the community who help as event sponsors and volunteers. The FIBArk Board of Directors thanks everyone again for their contribution and support toward this wonderful whitewater festival.

USRA R6 National Rafting Championship Downriver

Downriver through Browns Canyon. Teams will be leaving at 7:30am from either Stone Bridge or Hecla Junction. This will be dependent on water levels and being able to get timing staff into position at the finish. If water levels are too high, the hiking trail to Seidel’s gets washed out. There will be a get together for athletes, volunteers, family and friends at the take out following the downriver race. Food and beverages will be provided. We will plan on being back at the FIBArk Awards Platform for the awards announcement at 2pm.

Slalom Races

The accessibility of the river corridor in Salida makes this event very spectator friendly. Slalom places a premium on technical skill as paddlers are timed and penalized for missing, or even touching, a gate as they pass through. An Olympic sport, the FIBArk slalom regularly attracts top-flight competitors paddling alongside “weekend warriors” and aspiring racers. Age groups: Cadet (14 and under), Junior (15-18), U23 (19-23), Open (any age), Senior (31-40), Master (41 and older). Sponsored by RMOC and American Whitewater.

10:00 AM

F Street (5th to 1st St)

FIBArk Parade

The annual FIBArk parade is a highlight of the festival enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. The Parade features folks from all over Colorado to join in this FIBArk tradition. Thousands of spectators line F Street to cheer everything from horse-drawn wagons, monster trucks, elaborated floats and Hooligan” crafts”, all in a spirited family atmosphere. Sponsored by Moltz Construction.

Hooligan Race

Calling this a whitewater paddling event may be generous, but saying it is one of the most fun events of FIBArk would be right on. The Hooligan Race is open to anything that floats that’s not a boat. Hooligans dress up in costume and the winner, in 2nd place, is usually not just the fastest but often one of the few left standing, or, floating. This spectacle of “controlled chaos” is a local tradition that always produces a huge turnout on Saturday evening. Don’t miss it!
