March 14, 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm
On the second Thursday of each month, the Salida Council for the Arts presents the Creative Mixer from 5:30 to 7:00 pm in the SteamPlant’s Paquette Gallery. Artists working in all genres are encouraged to attend and meet like-minded people, to share influences and news, to soak up fresh ideas, and to be inspired by the energy that makes Salida a center of support and expression.
Each mixer begins at 5:30pm in the Paquette Gallery, where we are treated to a visual feast of the current artwork on display in the Paquette Gallery. The exhibiting artist briefly talks about their work, their need to express, and their unique perspective.
Meet this months featured artist, Cody Oldham, and enjoy his artwork in person!
While guests chat and view the current exhibition, live music plays; musicians are hired to share their passions and news of their upcoming gigs. We’ve enjoyed banjo tunes, cello, classic country vocals, jazz guitar, and classical flute.
Everyone is always invited. The council provides tasty hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar is open for business. Sometimes the connections seeded at the Creative Mixer have led to some incredible collaborative works and new friendships!
Meet this Month’s Artist: Cody Oldham
My name is Cody Oldham and I am a fourteen-year-old wildlife and landscape painter. I’ve been painting since I was eleven years old. There is nothing else I’d rather do.
I paint for hours every day, either in the studio or en plein air, always working to improve. Some paintings come out better than others, but I know that not every painting is going to be a master piece. I’m always pushing myself harder and trying new things. Experimentation is learning.
Living in the mountains of Colorado, I’m surrounded by vast landscapes which in inspiring to me. From the leaf on a tree to a dramatic mountain scene, my environment motivates me in many different ways. Every time I look at a n animal’s face or into its eyes, I think of a new idea for painting.
My mentors and heroes are Robert Bateman, John Banovich, James Gurney, and Andrew Tischler. All these artists have helped me proress quickly in my painting and my career. My father, also an artist, is a huge influence. He helps me fine-tune many aspects of my paintings.
Every day I’m grateful to have the opportunity to learn more and express myself in my paintings.
Cody’s exhibit will be up in the Paquette Gallery from March 1-15.
